Why do I need Gum Grafting?

Your gums may recede due to periodontal disease or agressive brushing of your teeth. Your periodontist can help identify the reasons your gums are receding, and repair the problem using a soft tissue graft procedure that will help prevent additional recession and bone loss.

When your gums recede, your tooth roots are left exposed. This may leave your smile looking uneven and unsightly because one or more of your teeth appear to be longer than the neighboring teeth. Your teeth may also become extremely sensitive to cold or hot foods and liquids because of the exposed roots.

How is Gum Grafting Performed?

Gum grafts are used to cover roots or develop gum tissue in cases of gum recession. During the gum grafting procedure, your periodontist will take gum tissue from either your palate or another donor source to cover the exposed or receded root. This procedure can be performed for one or several teeth to reduce sensitivity and repair your gum line.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

Gum grafts can reduce further recession of your gums, cover exposed roots to protect from decay, repair your even gum line, reduce the sensitivity of your tooth, and repair your healthy looking smile.
